Category: Network Management
Description: Manages system-level communication parameters including management interface settings on NBS devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NBS-SYSCOMM-MIB?
NBS-SYSCOMM-MIB is a private MRV/NBS MIB covering system-level IP communication configuration for the managed device's own management interface, including IPv6 SLAAC addressing, administrative vs. operational IP addresses and prefixes, and default gateway settings. It exposes configuration and operational-state data rather than traffic counters, focused on how the device itself is reachable on the management network. Its monitoring value lies in verifying that a device's management IP, prefix, and gateway configuration are correctly applied and operationally active, which is foundational to ensuring the device remains reachable for all other monitoring and management traffic. It relies on standard IPv6/IPv4 addressing concepts (e.g., SLAAC) layered with NBS-specific admin/operational state distinctions. It is typically used on NBS/MRV optical and Ethernet access network elements during provisioning and ongoing reachability verification. Engineers can download the NBS-SYSCOMM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NBS-SYSCOMM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- MRV/NBS optical Ethernet network element
Monitoring Examples
An operator would compare nbsSyscommInetAddrAdmin against nbsSyscommInetAddrOper to confirm a configured management address has actually taken effect operationally, and similarly check nbsSyscommGateAddrAdmin versus nbsSyscommGateAddrOper for the default gateway. A mismatch between admin and oper values, or an unexpected nbsSyscommInetSlaacAddr, would indicate a misconfiguration or an IPv6 autoconfiguration process overriding the intended static settings. The nbsSyscommInetAddrPrior and nbsSyscommGateAddrPrior objects help determine which of multiple configured addresses/gateways takes precedence.
What Can Be Monitored
- management IP address (admin vs operational)
- address prefix configuration
- default gateway (admin vs operational)
- IPv6 SLAAC address assignment
- address/gateway priority
