What Is DMTF-SOFTWARE-MIB?

DMTF-SOFTWARE-MIB is a standards-based MIB derived from the DMTF's (Distributed Management Task Force) Desktop Management Interface (DMI) software management model, mapping DMI Software group concepts (components and their attribute dependencies) into an SNMP MIB representation. It exposes tables describing dependencies between software attributes and components, including minimum/maximum allowed values and dependency type for a given class and attribute ID, essentially a software inventory/configuration-constraint model rather than a counters/traps MIB. Its practical monitoring value is in tracking software inventory and installed component configuration state, confirming which software components are present and whether their configured attribute values fall within allowed ranges, rather than reporting hardware sensors or performance counters. It is explicitly derived from and dependent on the DMTF DMI (Desktop Management Interface) specification and its DmiCounter textual convention, making it a bridge between legacy DMI agents and SNMP. It is typically found in older desktop/server management agents that expose DMI-based software inventory data over SNMP. An administrator would poll dmtfAttributeDependenciesTable/dmtfAttributeDependenciesEntry, indexed by class and attributeID, to check minimumValue and maximumValue constraints against the current dmtfAttributeDependenciesState for a software component, revealing whether an installed component's configuration is out of its allowed range. dependencyType and setNumber describe how one attribute's valid values depend on another, useful for validating a complex software configuration. dmtfComponentDependenciesTable would similarly be checked to confirm inter-component software dependencies are satisfied.
