Category: Products/Registration

Description: Defines Microsoft common enterprise objects shared across product-specific MIBs.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MSSCOMMON-MIB?

MSSCOMMON-MIB is an IBM Nways MSS (Multiprotocol Switched Services) common enterprise MIB that defines shared objects used across IBM's MSS product-specific MIB modules, notably a hardware Vital Product Data (VPD) table. It exposes an inventory-style data structure describing hardware components' VPD, keyed information such as component index, keyword, and associated data value, providing a generic mechanism for identifying installed hardware parts. Its monitoring role centers on hardware inventory and identification: administrators can retrieve VPD keyword/value pairs (e.g., serial numbers, part numbers, firmware revisions) for the first or subsequent hardware components in a chassis, which supports asset tracking and helps confirm the correct hardware/firmware is installed. As a 'common' MIB under the ibm/ibmProd/nwaysMSS enterprise arc, it is explicitly a shared dependency for other MSS product MIBs that reuse its VPD table structure and enterprise registration point. It is deployed in IBM Nways MSS multiprotocol switching/routing platforms used in legacy IBM networking environments.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MSSCOMMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM Nways MSS (Multiprotocol Switched Services) platform

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls mssHardwareVPDTable/mssHardwareVPDEntry, iterating vpdHwComponentIndex and vpdIndex to read vpdKeyword/vpdData pairs, retrieving values such as a card's serial number or firmware version for the installed hardware component. This lets an operator confirm which physical module or revision is installed in a given slot without needing product-specific MIBs, useful when auditing hardware inventory across many IBM Nways MSS chassis, a task that starts with an MSSCOMMON-MIB download so the VPD table structure can be loaded into a MIB browser.

What Can Be Monitored

  • hardware component VPD (vital product data)
  • component serial number
  • component part/keyword data
  • installed hardware inventory per slot
