What Is MSFT-MIB?

MSFT-MIB is Microsoft's top-level enterprise SNMP MIB, establishing the root OID subtree (under the IANA-assigned Microsoft enterprise number) beneath which all Microsoft-specific management modules -- covering software, systems, and Windows NT/Windows operating system branches -- are registered. It does not itself expose monitorable data; rather it is purely organizational, defining the "microsoft", "software", "systems", "os", "windowsNT", and "windows" OID branches that other Microsoft MIBs (e.g., for Windows services, IIS, or SQL Server) attach to. Because it has no OBJECT-TYPE instances, it cannot be polled for uptime, CPU, memory, or any hardware/software status directly. Every subsequent Microsoft-published MIB depends on this module for its OID placement in the enterprise tree. In practice it is imported by MIB tooling but never queried on its own against a live Windows server, and the MSFT-MIB reference is consulted mainly to confirm the correct OID branch for a specific Microsoft management module.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MSFT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Microsoft Windows servers and workstations (root registration only, no direct monitoring)

Monitoring Examples

MSFT-MIB defines only OID subtree identifiers (microsoft, software, systems, os, windowsNT, windows) with no OBJECT-TYPE instances, so there is nothing to poll here directly -- actual monitoring happens through the specific Microsoft MIBs (e.g., Windows service or performance MIBs) registered under this tree.
