Description: Informant Systems MIB for monitoring Microsoft ISA Server (Internet Security and Acceleration) firewall and proxy statistics via SNMP.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is INFORMANT-ISASERVER?

INFORMANT-ISASERVER is a third-party Informant Systems SNMP MIB that exposes Microsoft ISA Server (Internet Security and Acceleration) firewall/proxy performance counters. It covers H.323 VoIP call filtering activity, bandwidth control policy enforcement, web cache refresh performance, and packet filter counts. It is used to monitor the software service health of the ISA Server firewall/proxy engine, revealing whether VoIP call filtering is functioning under load, whether bandwidth throttling is actively constraining traffic, and whether the web cache's active-refresh mechanism is keeping up with demand. It depends on the Windows Performance Counters exposed by the ISA Server service itself rather than on other IETF network MIBs. It is typically deployed on Windows servers running Microsoft ISA Server, monitored by network/security operations teams via the SNMP Informant agent. Engineers can download the INFORMANT-ISASERVER file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in INFORMANT-ISASERVER. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Microsoft ISA Server firewall/proxy hosts

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would compare h323FilterActiveH323Calls against h323FilterTotalH323Calls to gauge current concurrent VoIP call load being filtered by ISA Server. Polling bandwidthControlTable/bandwidthControlEntry by bwCtrlInstance and comparing bwCtrlActualInboundBandwidth/bwCtrlActualOutboundBandwidth against the bwCtrlAssignedInboundBandwidth/bwCtrlAssignedOutboundBandwidth limits shows whether bandwidth policies are actively throttling connections. A rising cacheActiveRefreshKBPerSec or cacheActiveRefreshURLPerSec combined with degraded response times would flag the web cache refresh mechanism as a performance bottleneck.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active/total H.323 calls
  • bandwidth control policy assignments
  • actual vs assigned inbound/outbound bandwidth
  • cache active-refresh rate (KB/sec, URLs/sec)
  • packet filter activity

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using h323FilterActiveH323Calls OID:

Select a Microsoft ISA Server firewall/proxy host (SNMP Informant) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type h323FilterActiveH323Calls into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of H.323 calls that are currently active. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
