Category: Switch Management

Description: Defines fourth-generation management objects for Mellanox Technologies network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MELLANOX-MIB-4?

MELLANOX-MIB-4 is Mellanox Technologies' fourth-generation vendor SNMP module for its InfiniBand and Ethernet switch/networking products, providing general device management objects under the company's enterprise tree. It exposes device identity and inventory data -- serial number, software version, build info, and node name -- alongside a process table tracking system software processes running on the device. Its process table is directly aimed at software health monitoring: procStatus and procNumFailures for each named process let an operator detect a crashed or repeatedly failing management/switch software process before it causes a service disruption, while swVersion/buildInfo support firmware currency checks. It is a self-contained enterprise MIB depending only on general SNMPv2-SMI conventions, without evident reliance on a separate standard process/software MIB. It is deployed on Mellanox InfiniBand/Ethernet switches and network adapters used in high-performance computing and data center fabric networks.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MELLANOX-MIB-4. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Mellanox InfiniBand/Ethernet switch or network device

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll procTable/procEntry (indexed by procIndex) to check procStatus for each procName -- an unexpectedly stopped or repeatedly restarting management process (rising procNumFailures) would indicate a software fault affecting switch fabric management. serialNumber and swVersion would be cross-referenced during fleet audits to confirm a switch is running the expected firmware build and to track hardware inventory by nodeName, and administrators can download the MELLANOX-MIB-4 file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

What Can Be Monitored

  • software/firmware version and build info
  • running process status
  • process failure counts
  • device serial number/identity
