What Is LEFTHAND-NETWORKS-NUS-COMMON-STORAGE-MIB?
LEFTHAND-NETWORKS-NUS-COMMON-STORAGE-MIB is an HP/LeftHand Networks SNMP module for the storage subsystem of NSM (Network Storage Module) appliances, exposing per-physical-device storage health data. It provides a storage device table with model, device class, capacity, chain/bay position, serial number, and -- notably -- status, bay status, and temperature for each drive. This is a strong hardware-status monitoring MIB: it directly exposes disk drive health/status, physical bay status, and drive temperature, letting admins catch failing or overheating disks before they cause a RAID/array failure. It's vendor-specific to LeftHand's NSM/NUS storage stack and, like its siblings, defines its own conformance/compliance groups rather than depending on other storage-related IETF MIBs. It's used in HP P4000/LeftHand SAN deployments for proactive disk-level health and capacity monitoring. Engineers can download the LEFTHAND-NETWORKS-NUS-COMMON-STORAGE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

An admin would walk storageDeviceTable/storageDeviceEntry (keyed by storageDeviceIndex) to check storageDeviceStatus and storageDeviceBayStatus for every physical disk in the array, along with storageDeviceTemperature to catch a drive running hot before it fails. storageDeviceCapacity and storageDeviceModel/storageDeviceSerialNo help build an inventory of installed drives, while storageDeviceChain indicates which drive chain/enclosure a disk belongs to. A storageDeviceStatus transitioning to a failed/degraded value combined with a rising storageDeviceTemperature would be a strong early-warning signal of imminent disk failure.
