What Is JACOBS-SMI?

JACOBS-SMI is a Structure of Management Information module that registers the top-level private enterprise OID subtree for Jacobs University Bremen, an academic institution. It belongs to the general-purpose/organizational SMI category rather than any specific product line. This module contains no data objects of its own — it exists purely to reserve the enterprise number under which the university's own custom SNMP MIB modules, if any, would be built. It therefore exposes no hardware/software monitoring data such as uptime, temperature, or CPU load; any such objects would live in child MIBs defined beneath this OID root. In practice, the JACOBS-SMI file would only be loaded into a MIB compiler as a first step toward defining bespoke instrumentation, since it contains no objects to poll on its own. It depends only on the standard IANA/SNMPv2-SMI enterprise-registration mechanism. It would only be encountered in a research/university IT environment that has developed bespoke SNMP instrumentation.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in JACOBS-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral SMI registration module, not tied to a specific device — reserved for custom instrumentation at Jacobs University Bremen

Monitoring Examples

JACOBS-SMI has no sample objects and, being a bare SMI enterprise-registration module, defines no monitorable data — there is nothing here to poll or interpret as a fault/performance indicator.
