Category: Domain: Environmental Monitoring, Vendor: Jacobs University

Description: Defines managed objects for monitoring FS20 wireless home automation sensors at Jacobs University Bremen, supporting temperature and switch state readings.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is JACOBS-FS20-MIB?

JACOBS-FS20-MIB is a research/hobbyist MIB from Jacobs University Bremen that bridges the ELV FS20 home-automation RF protocol (popular in Germany) into SNMP, letting an SNMP manager interact with FS20 sensors and switches. It exposes a table of FS20 devices keyed by house/address codes along with the last command sent, last time a device was heard from, and its current status, plus row-creation controls for adding new devices. Its monitoring value is centered on environmental and device-state data such as temperature sensor readings and switch on/off status, and it also tracks liveness (last-heard timestamps) so a manager can tell if an FS20 device has stopped responding. It has no dependency on standard networking MIBs since it models a proprietary RF protocol rather than IP interfaces, though it uses standard SNMP table conventions (RowStatus) for device provisioning. It is deployed in home-automation gateways or research testbeds that translate FS20 RF traffic into SNMP for centralized monitoring. Engineers can download the JACOBS-FS20-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in JACOBS-FS20-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • FS20 home-automation RF sensors/switches
  • SNMP-to-FS20 gateway device

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the fs20Table/fs20Entry rows, using fs20HC1/fs20HC2/fs20Addr to identify a specific sensor or switch, and check fs20Status alongside fs20LastHeard to see if, say, a temperature sensor has gone silent (stale fs20LastHeard) or a switch has unexpectedly changed state. The fs20Cmd and fs20LastSent objects let the manager confirm the last command issued to a device actually took effect. fs20Notifications would fire traps on state changes such as a device failing to respond, and fs20RowStatus is used to add or remove device entries dynamically.

What Can Be Monitored

  • FS20 device status
  • temperature/switch sensor readings
  • last-heard timestamp (liveness)
  • last command sent
  • device address/house code
  • notification of state changes
