Description: IEEE 802.1 MIB for Device Identity (802.1AR) managing secure device identity certificates and enrollment in Ethernet networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IEEE8021-DEVID-MIB?

This is a vendor-neutral IEEE 802.1AR standards MIB for managing Secure Device Identity (DevID) modules on network equipment, covering initial and locally significant device identity certificates used for authentication. It exposes a DevID module capability table (whether the module supports, generates, or inserts locally significant DevIDs) and a certificate table listing fingerprints, public key info, and enable/disable state for each identity certificate. Rather than physical hardware sensor data, its status monitoring is security/identity oriented: whether a device's DevID certificate and key are enabled, and whether it is an Initial or Local DevID, underpinning secure authentication (e.g., 802.1X/MACsec) rather than physical health. As an IEEE 802.1 standard it is designed to be implemented alongside other 802.1 security and access-control MIBs such as IEEE8021X-PAE-MIB. It is typically deployed on enterprise switches, routers, or other network infrastructure supporting hardware-rooted device identity for zero-touch provisioning or certificate-based network access control. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the IEEE8021-DEVID-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IEEE8021-DEVID-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, IEEE 802.1AR standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • enterprise switches/routers with hardware-rooted device identity (TPM/secure element)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk devIDModuleTable to check devIDModuleSupportsLDevIDs and devIDModuleGeneratesLDevIDKeys, confirming a device's cryptographic module can issue locally significant identities. They would then inspect devIDCertTable, checking devIDCertEnabled and devIDCertKeyEnabled to confirm the active identity certificate (flagged via devIDCertIDevID) is enabled, and compare devIDCertFingerprint/devIDCertPublicKeyInfoFprint against expected values to detect a certificate substitution or provisioning error.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DevID module capabilities (support/generation/insertion of local DevIDs)
  • certificate enabled/disabled state
  • key enabled state
  • certificate fingerprint
  • Initial vs Local DevID designation

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using devIDStatisticKeyGenerationCount OID:

Select a device implementing IEEE8021-DEVID-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type devIDStatisticKeyGenerationCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of LDevID key pairs generated by the module. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
