Description: IBM MIB for the IBM TS4500 tape library system providing management of library components, drives, and cartridge inventory.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IBM-TS4500-MIBv2?

IBM-TS4500-MIBv2 is an IBM proprietary MIB for managing the IBM TS4500 tape library system, a high-capacity enterprise tape automation library used for backup and archival storage. It exposes objects covering library component identification (model/serial numbers via MTMNLSN), error codes and sense data (SKASCASCQ, URC), tape drive and cartridge details (tape drive ID, VOLSER, world-wide node name, drive serial number), and location/severity information for error events. This is heavily a hardware and fault-status MIB, letting an administrator monitor drive health, cartridge inventory, and error severity/location within the library, and detect hardware faults such as a jammed cartridge, failed drive, or communication error reported via SCSI sense codes. It builds on IBM's legacy 3584 tape library MIB structure (visible in the ibm3584-prefixed object names), indicating continuity with earlier IBM tape library management MIBs. It is typically deployed in enterprise data centers using TS4500 tape libraries for large-scale backup and long-term data archival. Engineers can download the IBM-TS4500-MIBv2 file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IBM-TS4500-MIBv2. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM TS4500 tape library

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ibm3584MIBObjectsErrorCode and ibm3584MIBObjectsSeverity to detect and prioritize fault events reported by the library, cross-referencing ibm3584MIBObjectsLocation to identify which drive or slot triggered the error. Checking ibm3584MIBObjectsDrvSN and ibm3584MIBObjectsWWNN against a known-good drive inventory would help confirm no drive has silently failed or been swapped. A rising count of SKASCASCQ (SCSI sense key/ASC/ASCQ) error entries for a specific ibm3584MIBObjectsTD (tape drive) would indicate that drive is experiencing recurring read/write failures and needs replacement.

What Can Be Monitored

  • tape drive error codes and severity
  • cartridge (VOLSER) inventory and location
  • drive serial number/WWNN health
  • library component error location
