Category: Pseudowire, Textual Conventions and Registries
Description: Defines textual conventions for pseudowire type and PSN type used in Pseudo Wire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3) MIBs.
IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring IANA-PWE3-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.
What Is IANA-PWE3-MIB?
This is an IETF/IANA-maintained standards MIB, not tied to a vendor, that defines shared textual conventions for Pseudowire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3) technology used to carry Layer 2 services (such as Frame Relay, ATM, or Ethernet) over packet-switched networks like MPLS or IP. It does not itself expose device data categories like interfaces, environment, or performance counters; instead it supplies two textual conventions, IANAPwTypeTC (pseudowire type) and IANAPwPsnTypeTC (packet-switched network type), which other PWE3 MIB modules import and reuse to encode enumerated values consistently. Because it contains no scalar or tabular objects, it has no direct use for monitoring hardware or software status such as uptime, temperature, or CPU load; its value is entirely in standardizing the vocabulary that operational PWE3 MIBs build on. It is explicitly dependent on, and referenced by, other PWE3-related MIBs under IANA/IETF governance following RFC 4446-style change procedures. Typical deployment context is any carrier or enterprise MPLS/PSN edge device implementing pseudowire services that needs a common, IANA-governed set of type codes across its PWE3 MIB implementation, consistent with the IANA-PWE3-MIB RFC governance model.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IANA-PWE3-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- MPLS/PSN edge routers and pseudowire-capable network devices
Monitoring Examples
This module defines only textual conventions (IANAPwTypeTC, IANAPwPsnTypeTC) and contains no runtime scalar or tabular objects of its own, so there is no monitoring scenario to describe directly from it. Its conventions are consumed by other PWE3 MIBs' tables, for example a pseudowire table's type column, to render an enumerated pseudowire or PSN type value in readable form. An admin would never poll IANA-PWE3-MIB objects directly, only see its enumerations surface inside dependent pseudowire monitoring MIBs.
