Description: Registers object identifier values for well-known programming and scripting languages used in SNMP script MIB contexts.
IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring IANA-LANGUAGE-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.
What Is IANA-LANGUAGE-MIB?
IANA-LANGUAGE-MIB is an IETF/IANA standards-track MIB (RFC 2591) that maintains the official object identifier registry of well-known programming and scripting languages usable within SNMP Script MIB contexts. Rather than exposing runtime device state, it defines OBJECT-IDENTITY values such as ianaLangJavaByteCode, ianaLangTcl, ianaLangPerl, ianaLangScheme, ianaLangSRSL, ianaLangPSL, and ianaLangSMSL, each with a DESCRIPTION and REFERENCE identifying the script transfer format for that language. It is a pure registry/taxonomy MIB with no tables, counters, or notifications, serving as a stable naming authority that other MIBs (notably the Script MIB, RFC 2592) reference by OID when identifying the language of a downloaded management script. It has no dependency on device hardware or software state and is not deployed for monitoring per se, but is loaded by MIB compilers and script-management agents that need to resolve a language OID to a human-readable name. Administrators working with SNMP script-delegation agents can consult the IANA-LANGUAGE-MIB RFC registry to confirm which scripting languages a given script-transfer OID represents.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IANA-LANGUAGE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 2591), an IANA registry not tied to any specific manufacturer or device
Monitoring Examples
An operator resolves a scripting-language OID reported by a Script MIB agent (e.g., in a script's language-identification object) against ianaLangPerl or ianaLangTcl in this MIB to confirm which interpreter format a delegated management script uses; an unrecognized OID not present in this registry would indicate a private or unregistered scripting language requiring vendor-specific handling.
What Can Be Monitored
- registered scripting/programming language OID assignments
- language description and reference metadata
- language OID registry integrity for Script MIB agents
