Category: Protocol: VRRP, Vendor: Huawei

Description: Huawei VRRP snooping MIB for monitoring VRRP advertisement traffic on access switches without active VRRP participation.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HUAWEI-VRRP-SNOOPING-MIB?

HUAWEI-VRRP-SNOOPING-MIB is a Huawei-proprietary module for passively monitoring VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) advertisement traffic on Layer 2 access switches that do not themselves participate in VRRP. It exposes snooped information about observed VRRP groups/virtual-router IDs, the currently snooped master's address, and the ingress port/VLAN on which VRRP advertisements were seen. Its monitoring purpose is to give visibility into gateway-router hardware/software status without direct SNMP access to those routers: it reveals which router currently holds the VRRP master role and can flag master failover events as they happen, as well as VRRP traffic arriving on an unexpected port. It is fundamentally derived from the standard VRRP protocol (RFC 5798) and complements the standard VRRP-MIB deployed on the actual VRRP-speaking routers. It is typically deployed on Huawei Layer 2 access switches sitting between VRRP-enabled default-gateway routers and end hosts. Engineers can download the HUAWEI-VRRP-SNOOPING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HUAWEI-VRRP-SNOOPING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Huawei Layer 2 access switches

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll a snooped VRRP table (an hwVrrpSnpGroupTable/hwVrrpSnpGroupEntry pattern) recording each observed virtual-router ID, the currently snooped master address, and the ingress port/VLAN. Watching the snooped master address change confirms that VRRP failover occurred correctly after a gateway router was rebooted or lost its uplink. Seeing VRRP advertisements arrive on an unexpected access port would flag a misconfigured or rogue device impersonating the gateway.

What Can Be Monitored

  • snooped VRRP group/virtual-router ID
  • observed VRRP master address/state
  • VRRP advertisement ingress port/VLAN
  • VRRP master failover events
