Description: HP SNMP MIB for managing error message notifications and system event log entries on HP ProCurve switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-SWITCH-ERROR-MSG-MIB?

HP-SWITCH-ERROR-MSG-MIB is an HP ProCurve switch MIB that surfaces internal error and event-log messages generated by the switch's management software through SNMP. It exposes a table of logged error entries capturing which internal entity raised the error, a sequence/timestamp, the specific SNMP OID involved, and a human-readable error message and code. This makes it a direct software-health monitoring tool: rather than reporting temperature or CPU load, it reports internal firmware/software faults, failed SNMP set/get operations, and other abnormal conditions logged by the switch's error-handling subsystem, effectively acting as a remote syslog-like feed over SNMP. It is a self-contained HP-specific MIB with no strong dependency on other standard MIBs beyond basic SNMPv2 conformance conventions. It is deployed on HP ProCurve managed switches in enterprise wiring closets and campus networks where administrators want proactive visibility into internal error conditions without console/syslog access. Engineers can download the HP-SWITCH-ERROR-MSG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-SWITCH-ERROR-MSG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP ProCurve managed switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls hpSwitchErrorMsgTable/hpSwitchErrorMsgEntry and inspects hpSwitchErrorTime, hpSwitchErrorFailedOID, and hpSwitchEntityErrorMsg to see when and why an internal operation failed, with hpSwitchSnmpErrorCode giving the specific SNMP error code returned. A cluster of new entries with the same hpSwitchErrorEntityType appearing after a firmware update would flag a regression in that subsystem. hpSwitchErrorEntityHandle and hpSwitchErrorSnmpSeqCode let the admin correlate error entries to the specific managed entity and sequence of events.

What Can Be Monitored

  • logged internal error/event messages
  • failed SNMP OID operations
  • error timestamps
  • error codes by entity
  • entity/subsystem generating the error
