Description: Hirschmann HiOS (HM2) Layer 2 multicast MIB for IGMP snooping and MLD snooping configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HM2-L2MCAST-MIB?

HM2-L2MCAST-MIB is a Hirschmann (Belden) enterprise MIB for the HiOS platform (HM2 subtree), used to configure and monitor Layer 2 multicast handling via IGMP/MLD snooping on industrial Ethernet switches. It exposes configuration and status data for the snooping querier function, static and auto-detected multicast query ports, and forward-all port lists, alongside a statistics subtree for snooping activity. Rather than hardware health, this MIB's monitoring value is in software/network-service status: confirming the IGMP/MLD snooping querier is active on the correct ports, that forward-all ports are correctly provisioned, and that snooping statistics show expected multicast join/leave activity, all of which affect whether multicast traffic (e.g. industrial control or video) is delivered efficiently or flooded. It builds on the general Hirschmann HM2 platform MIB structure and standard IGMP/MLD snooping concepts defined by IETF but is Hirschmann-proprietary in its object naming. It is typically deployed in industrial automation and process-control Ethernet networks using Hirschmann managed switches, and engineers commonly start with an HM2-L2MCAST-MIB download to load the module into their monitoring platform.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HM2-L2MCAST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Hirschmann HiOS-based industrial Ethernet switches

Monitoring Examples

An engineer would poll hm2L2McastSnoopingQuerierTable to verify hm2L2McastSnoopingQueryPorts and hm2L2McastSnoopingQueryStaticPorts match the intended querier port configuration, catching a misconfigured or missing multicast querier that would degrade multicast delivery. Checking hm2L2McastSnoopingForwardAllTable's hm2L2McastSnoopingForwardAllStaticPorts confirms which ports are set to always receive multicast traffic regardless of group membership, useful when troubleshooting unexpected multicast flooding. The hm2L2McastSnoopingStatistics subtree would be reviewed to spot an abnormal drop or spike in snooped join/leave message counts indicating a misbehaving multicast source or receiver.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IGMP/MLD snooping querier ports
  • static vs auto-detected query ports
  • forward-all port configuration
  • snooping statistics/counters
  • multicast filtering configuration

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hm2L2McastSnoopingIgmpReportsFramesProcessed OID:

Select a Hirschmann HiOS industrial Ethernet switch (IGMP/MLD snooping) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hm2L2McastSnoopingIgmpReportsFramesProcessed into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports iGMP reports, joins or leaves processed by CPU. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
