Category: Domain: Security, Vendor: H3C/HH3C

Description: Manages H3C web-based portal authentication, controlling user access through HTTP-based captive portal mechanisms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is H3C-WEB-AUTHENTICATION-MIB?

H3C-WEB-AUTHENTICATION-MIB is an H3C enterprise MIB providing trap notifications for the vendor's web-based captive portal authentication feature on H3C switches and routers. It exposes trap varbinds describing the client and outcome of an authentication event: VLAN ID, reason code, action code, and client MAC address. It supports monitoring of the network access-control software subsystem rather than classic hardware health — traps notify an NMS whenever a client's web-authentication state changes (success, failure, or an enforcement action), letting operators track captive-portal behavior and troubleshoot clients being denied network access. It is built on H3C's private enterprise MIB tree and works alongside H3C's separate portal/AAA configuration MIBs that define the authentication policy itself. It's deployed on H3C access switches and routers in enterprise or campus networks using web-based captive-portal authentication for guest or BYOD access. Engineers can download the H3C-WEB-AUTHENTICATION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in H3C-WEB-AUTHENTICATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • H3C switch/router with web/portal authentication enabled

Monitoring Examples

When h3cWaTrap fires, its varbinds h3cWaClientMacAddr, h3cWaVlanID, h3cWaReasonCode, and h3cWaActionCode tell the NMS which client MAC address on which VLAN triggered the event, the reason code explaining why (e.g., an authentication failure), and the resulting action taken (e.g., port block). An admin seeing repeated failure-reason traps from the same MAC address can quickly identify a client that is being persistently denied network access.

What Can Be Monitored

  • client MAC address of auth event
  • VLAN ID of authenticating client
  • authentication reason code
  • authentication action taken
