Description: ITU-T H.245 MIB for managing H.245 control protocol negotiation for multimedia communication in H.323 sessions.

What Is H245-MIB?

H245-MIB is an ITU-T standards-based MIB module supporting management of the H.245 control protocol, which handles capability negotiation, logical channel establishment, and media control for H.323 multimedia and VoIP conferencing sessions. It belongs to the broader ITU-T H.323 multimedia signaling MIB family rather than to any single vendor's proprietary tree. As modeled here it primarily exposes conformance grouping definitions (h245MIBGroups) that specify which H.245-related object groups and notifications a compliant SNMP agent must implement, rather than a large independent set of counters. In monitoring terms its value is indirect: it underpins visibility into call/channel negotiation health and signaling status on devices running H.245, which network operators use to catch stalled or failed multimedia session setups. It is deployed alongside H.323 gatekeepers, gateways, and multipoint control units in enterprise and carrier VoIP/videoconferencing infrastructure. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the H245-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in H245-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • H.323 gateways and gatekeepers
  • video/voice conferencing multipoint control units (MCUs)
  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

The only object visible in this module, h245MIBGroups, is a conformance grouping construct rather than a live data object, so this MIB is best understood as defining which H.245 object groups and notifications an agent must support to be considered compliant. It does not itself expose pollable counters in this excerpt; an administrator would instead poll the underlying H.245 managed objects it groups (e.g., channel and negotiation state) to detect stalled call setups or capability mismatches. Honestly, no standalone runtime monitoring scenario can be described from h245MIBGroups alone.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using h245ControlChannelConnectionAttemptsFail OID:

Select a device implementing H245-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type h245ControlChannelConnectionAttemptsFail into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of failures when trying to connect to a listen port. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
