Description: GPFS-MIB module

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is GPFS-MIB?

GPFS-MIB is an IBM MIB providing configuration and status monitoring for IBM's General Parallel File System (GPFS, now known as IBM Spectrum Scale), a clustered file system used in high-performance computing and storage environments. It exposes cluster-wide and per-node status and configuration tables, along with file system, storage pool, and disk-level status, configuration, and performance tables. This MIB is heavily oriented toward monitoring both hardware and software status of a storage cluster: gpfsNodeStatusTable and gpfsClusterStatusTable reveal whether cluster nodes are up and properly joined, gpfsFileSystemStatusTable/gpfsFileSystemPerfTable expose file system availability and I/O performance, and gpfsDiskStatusTable/gpfsDiskPerfTable expose the health and throughput of the underlying physical disks, making it central to catching a down node, a degraded storage pool, or a failing disk before it causes an outage. It depends on the underlying GPFS software subagent (gpfsSubagentVersion) reporting into the standard SNMP framework, and complements IBM's other Spectrum Scale management interfaces. It is deployed in HPC and enterprise storage clusters running IBM GPFS/Spectrum Scale across multiple nodes and shared disks. Engineers can download the GPFS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in GPFS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM GPFS / Spectrum Scale clustered storage node

Monitoring Examples

A storage administrator would poll gpfsNodeStatusTable across all cluster members to confirm every node reports an up/active status, and would check gpfsDiskStatusTable per disk to catch a disk reporting a down or suspended state within a storage pool. Correlating a drop in gpfsFileSystemPerfTable throughput with a degraded entry in gpfsStgPoolTable would indicate a storage pool running with a failed or slow disk rather than a network-side bottleneck.

What Can Be Monitored

  • cluster and per-node status
  • file system availability and performance
  • storage pool status
  • disk status and performance per disk
  • GPFS subagent version
