Category: ATM, Vendor: Fore Systems (ATM)

Description: Fore Systems ILMI SNMP proxy MIB providing objects for proxying SNMP management requests over ATM ILMI connections to end systems.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Fore-IlmiSnmpProxy-MIB?

This is a FORE Systems proprietary MIB module built for ATM switches and edge devices that used FORE's networking hardware in the 1990s and 2000s. It exposes a proxy table (ispTable) that lets a management station send SNMP requests to a remote end system over the ILMI (Integrated Local Management Interface) VCI of an ATM virtual circuit, rather than through a direct IP path. The data it carries is primarily configuration and operational status: each entry records the port, VPI/VCI, target OID, and the operation to perform, plus the operational and configuration status of that proxied request and the value returned by the remote device. In effect it lets an operator use standard SNMP polling to check whether a remotely-connected ATM device is reachable and responding correctly, which is itself a form of software/communication-path health monitoring rather than direct hardware telemetry. It depends implicitly on the ATM Forum ILMI specification for the underlying transport mechanism, and would typically be deployed on FORE Systems ATM switches or ATM network interface cards used in carrier or enterprise ATM backbones. Engineers can download the Fore-IlmiSnmpProxy-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Fore-IlmiSnmpProxy-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • FORE Systems ATM switch
  • ATM network interface/edge device

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would populate ispTable with an ispPort/ispVPI pair and an ispOID identifying a remote MIB object to query, then poll ispOperStatus and ispRespOID/ispValue to see the proxied result. If ispConfStatus shows the entry properly configured but ispOperStatus indicates failure, that reveals the ILMI VCI to the remote ATM end system is down or the remote agent is not responding, a useful early sign of an ATM link or management-plane fault. ispCommunityName documents which SNMP community was used for the proxied request, useful for auditing access.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ILMI proxy request configuration status
  • ILMI proxy operational status
  • proxied OID and returned value
  • ATM port/VPI used for proxy request
  • SNMP community used for proxy request
