Description: Fore Systems E3 (34 Mbit/s) interface MIB providing performance monitoring and configuration for E3 trunk modules in ForeRunner ATM switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Fore-E3-MIB?

Fore-E3-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Fore Systems that provides configuration and performance monitoring for E3 (34 Mbit/s) trunk interface modules in ForeRunner ATM switches. Its e3ConfTable configures each port's e3LineType, e3LineCoding, e3SendCode/ReceiveCode, e3LoopbackConfig, e3TxClockSource, and Rx/Tx scrambling, with e3LineStatus and e3IdleUnassignedCells reflecting current line condition. Performance data is split across an e3FramingTable of physical-layer error counters (e3FramingLOSs, LCVs, FERRs, OOFs, FERFs, AISs, BIP8s, FEBEs), an e3PlcpTable of PLCP-sublayer counters (FERRs, LOFs, BIP8s, FEBEs, Yellows), and an e3AtmTable of ATM-cell-layer counters (e3AtmHCSs, RxCells, TxCells, LCDs). This layered structure lets an operator isolate whether a problem on an E3 trunk originates at the physical/line layer, the PLCP framing layer, or the ATM cell layer itself. The Fore-E3-MIB MIB is deployed on FORE Systems ATM switches carrying E3 trunk connections in carrier and enterprise ATM backbones.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Fore-E3-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • FORE Systems ForeRunner ATM switches with E3 trunk modules

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls e3FramingLOSs and e3LineStatus for a given e3ConfBoard/Module/Port trunk; a nonzero and climbing e3FramingLOSs count alongside e3LineStatus reporting a loss-of-signal condition would confirm a physical-layer fault on that E3 trunk rather than an ATM-layer cell-loss issue.

What Can Be Monitored

  • E3 line configuration (coding, clocking, loopback, scrambling)
  • physical-layer framing error counters (LOS/LCV/FERR/OOF/AIS/BIP8/FEBE)
  • PLCP sublayer error counters
  • ATM cell-layer counters (HCS errors, Rx/Tx cells, cell delineation loss)

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using e3FramingLOSs OID:

Select an FORE Systems ATM switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type e3FramingLOSs into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of seconds in which Loss Of Signal (LOS) errors were detected by the E3 Receive Framer block. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
