Description: Generic file management MIB providing objects for monitoring file system metadata, file attributes, and storage utilization.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is FILE-MIB?
FILE-MIB is a generic (vendor-neutral in intent, though often embedded in specific network device firmware) MIB providing objects for tracking file transfer and file system operations on a managed device, such as configuration or firmware file uploads/downloads. It exposes a file table recording source and destination file names/locations, the remote host involved in a transfer, file ownership, sequence numbering, and slot number for modular chassis. Its monitoring value centers on software/operational status: fileActionStatus and filePerformAction let an operator track whether a file copy, upload, or similar operation is in progress, succeeded, or failed, which is useful when pushing firmware or configuration files to a device and confirming completion. It is typically used alongside chassis or system MIBs that identify the module/slot referenced by fileSlotNumber. It is deployed on modular network equipment (chassis switches/routers) that support SNMP-driven file transfer operations for firmware upgrades or configuration backup/restore. Engineers can download the FILE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FILE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- modular chassis switch/router supporting SNMP-driven file transfer
Monitoring Examples
An operator pushing a new firmware image would populate fileTable/fileTableEntry with fileSrcFile and fileDestFile naming the source and destination filenames, fileHostIpAddr for the remote TFTP/FTP server, and fileUploadFileType to indicate the file's purpose, then trigger the transfer via filePerformAction. Polling fileActionStatus afterward confirms whether the transfer completed successfully, is still in progress, or failed, and fileSlotNumber identifies which chassis module the operation targets in a multi-slot system.
What Can Be Monitored
- file transfer action status
- source/destination file names
- remote host for transfer
- target slot/module
- file upload type
