Description: Broadcom FastPath MIB for Industry Standard Discovery Protocol (ISDP/CDP-compatible) neighbor discovery on FastPath switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is FASTPATH-ISDP-MIB?

FASTPATH-ISDP-MIB is a Broadcom enterprise MIB implementing the Industry Standard Discovery Protocol (ISDP, a CDP-compatible neighbor discovery protocol) for switches running the Broadcom FastPath switch software stack. It exposes a per-interface enable table (agentIsdpInterfaceTable) controlling whether ISDP runs on a given port, and a discovered-neighbor cache table (agentIsdpCacheTable) recording each neighbor's address, local interface, protocol version, and device ID. Its monitoring value is primarily topology/software-status oriented: confirming ISDP is enabled where expected and using the neighbor cache to verify a switch correctly sees its directly connected neighbors, which helps validate cabling/topology and detect an unexpected or missing neighbor (e.g., a link that's physically up but not exchanging discovery frames). It's functionally equivalent to and interoperates with Cisco's CDP, though implemented as Broadcom's own FastPath enterprise MIB rather than depending on a Cisco MIB directly. It's deployed on Broadcom FastPath-based switches (used by numerous white-box and OEM switch vendors) in networks needing CDP-style neighbor discovery. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the FASTPATH-ISDP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FASTPATH-ISDP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Broadcom FastPath-based switch (OEM/white-box)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll agentIsdpInterfaceTable/agentIsdpInterfaceEnable to confirm ISDP is turned on for a given agentIsdpInterfaceIfIndex, then check agentIsdpCacheTable/agentIsdpCacheEntry for that interface to see the discovered agentIsdpCacheDeviceId and agentIsdpCacheAddress of the connected neighbor. An interface with ISDP enabled but no corresponding cache entry indicates the connected device either doesn't speak ISDP/CDP or the link isn't properly negotiated, a useful topology-validation signal.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-interface ISDP enable status
  • discovered neighbor device ID
  • discovered neighbor address
  • neighbor protocol version
  • local interface mapping to neighbor

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using agentIsdpStatisticsPduReceived OID:

Select a Broadcom FastPath-based Ethernet switch (multi-vendor OEM) (Industry Standard Discovery Protocol) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type agentIsdpStatisticsPduReceived into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the display the number of all ISDP pdu received. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in packets), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
