Description: Extends RMON statistics collection with Dell-specific remote monitoring capabilities on switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Dell-RMON?
Dell-RMON is a Dell-branded (RADLAN-derived) extension of RMON (Remote Network Monitoring) providing history-based statistics collection on Dell switches. It exposes configuration and control data for RMON history collection: which data source (interface) to sample, how many history buckets are requested versus granted, the sampling interval, and ownership/status of each history-control entry. Its monitoring value lies in enabling longer-term performance trending on interfaces -- by configuring history buckets, an operator can later retrieve time-series interface statistics to spot bandwidth trends, errors, or utilization spikes -- though this module itself governs the control/configuration side of that collection rather than exposing hardware environmental data. It directly extends the IETF standard RMON MIB (RFC 2819) framework with vendor-specific version and quota controls. It is typically deployed on Dell managed switches where operators want to configure historical interface statistics collection beyond the default RMON quota limits. Engineers can download the Dell-RMON file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-RMON. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Dell managed switches (RADLAN-based)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would configure rlHistoryControlTable, indexed by rlHistoryControlIndex, setting rlHistoryControlDataSource to the interface of interest, rlHistoryControlBucketsRequested and reviewing rlHistoryControlBucketsGranted to confirm how many history samples were actually allocated, and rlHistoryControlInterval to set the sampling period. rlRmonControlHistoryControlMaxGlobalBuckets and rlRmonControlHistoryControlQuotaBucket would be checked when bucket requests are denied due to global RMON history quota exhaustion, revealing a resource-limit issue on the switch.
What Can Be Monitored
- RMON history control data source per interface
- history buckets requested vs. granted
- history sampling interval
- global RMON history bucket quota usage
