Description: Manages protected port (port isolation) configurations to restrict inter-port traffic on Dell switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Dell-ProtectedPorts-MIB?
This Dell private enterprise MIB manages "protected port" (port isolation) configuration on Dell managed switches, a feature that restricts traffic forwarding between designated ports at Layer 2. It exposes configuration objects - which ports belong to which protected-port community/group, and each protected port's list of allowed egress ports - plus status objects reflecting the currently active protected-port state. Its monitoring relevance is primarily configuration/state verification rather than hardware health: confirming that port isolation is enabled globally and applied as intended to prevent unauthorized inter-port communication, which matters for security compliance auditing. It has no significant dependency on external standards MIBs. It is deployed in Dell PowerConnect/N-series switch environments, typically in multi-tenant, hospitality, or shared-infrastructure networks where hosts on the same VLAN must be kept isolated from each other. Engineers can download the Dell-ProtectedPorts-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-ProtectedPorts-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Dell PowerConnect/N-Series managed switch
Monitoring Examples
An admin can read rlProtectedPortsGlobalEnable to confirm the feature is active, then walk rlProtectedPortsTable/rlProtectedPortsEntry to check each port's rlProtectedPortType and rlProtectedPortCommunity grouping. Cross-checking rlProtectedPortsStatusTable and rlProtectedPortEgressPorts reveals whether a port's actual forwarding behavior matches the intended isolation policy, catching misconfigurations that could let isolated hosts communicate.
What Can Be Monitored
- global protected-port feature status
- per-port protected type
- port community/group membership
- allowed egress ports per protected port
- protected port operational status
