Description: Manages file system operations and file transfer capabilities on Dell network devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Dell-File?
Dell-File is a Dell enterprise MIB (used on Dell Networking/MTS-based switches) providing a private file-system management extension for viewing and manipulating files stored on the device's flash/local storage. It exposes a file table listing each stored file's name, permissions, size, and modification date/time, plus a row-status column to control file actions and an overall flash-size scalar. This is a software/storage status MIB: it lets an administrator monitor available flash storage space, confirm configuration or firmware image files are present with expected sizes and timestamps, and detect unexpected file changes or storage exhaustion. It is a self-contained vendor extension, typically used alongside Dell's system and chassis MIBs for full device management. It is deployed on Dell networking switches running Dell's MTS (formerly Force10/PowerConnect-lineage) software where local file/flash management via SNMP is needed, and administrators can obtain the Dell-File download to load it directly into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-File. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Dell Networking switch (MTS software)
Monitoring Examples
An admin can walk rlFileTable/rlFileEntry to list every file on the switch by rlFileName, checking rlFileSize and rlFileModificationDate/rlFileModificationTime to confirm the current firmware image or config backup is present and recently updated. Comparing total file sizes against rlFileFlashSize reveals how much flash storage remains free, warning of impending storage exhaustion. The rlFileActionTable can be used to trigger operations like file deletion or copy, with rlFileRowStatus reflecting the outcome.
What Can Be Monitored
- stored file inventory
- file size and modification time
- file permissions
- flash storage capacity
- file action status
