Description: Monitors and controls energy-saving features and power consumption on Dell switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Dell-GREEN-MIB?
Dell-GREEN-MIB is a Dell enterprise MIB (rooted under rnd from Dell-MIB) that monitors and controls the Green Ethernet energy-saving features — Energy Detect and Short Reach — on Dell switches. It exposes global controls rlGreenEthEnergyDetectEnable and rlGreenEthShortReachEnable, system-wide power telemetry via rlGreenEthCurrentEnergyConsumption and rlGreenEthCurrentMaxEnergyConsumption (in mWatt, used together to compute percentage savings) and rlGreenEthCumulativePowerSaveMeter (cumulative Watt-hours saved, resettable via rlGreenEthCumulativePowerSaveMeterReset), plus a per-port rlGreenEthPortTable keyed by ifIndex and saving-type that reports each port's admin/operational Green Ethernet state and, via the NonOperReasonType convention, the specific reason (port not present, unsupported link type/speed, port up/down, cable length over threshold, etc.) a port is not currently saving power. This gives operators visibility into whether energy-saving features are actually reducing power draw per port and system-wide, and why a given port may not be participating. It depends on Dell-MIB for its OID anchor, Q-BRIDGE-MIB's PortList type, and IF-MIB's ifIndex, and is deployed on Dell managed switches supporting the Green Ethernet feature set. Sustainability-focused network teams often pull a Dell-GREEN-MIB MIB Browser view to audit per-port power-saving status.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-GREEN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Dell managed Ethernet switches (Green Ethernet-capable models)
Monitoring Examples
An operator polls rlGreenEthPortTable's rlGreenEthPortOperState and rlGreenEthPortNonOperReason for a given ifIndex to see whether Short Reach or Energy Detect is actively saving power on that port; a non-operational state with reason ll (link length exceeds threshold) would explain why a port isn't benefiting from the cumulative savings tracked in rlGreenEthCumulativePowerSaveMeter.
What Can Be Monitored
- global Energy Detect/Short Reach enable state
- system-wide current vs. maximum energy consumption
- cumulative power-save meter
- per-port Green Ethernet admin/operational state
- per-port non-operational reason code
