Category: Network Interfaces, Quality of Service
Description: Provides a higher-level configuration interface for Differentiated Services, bridging network-wide QoS policy definitions and the instance-specific DIFFSERV-MIB objects.
IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring DIFFSERV-CONFIG-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.
What Is DIFFSERV-CONFIG-MIB?
DIFFSERV-CONFIG-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based IETF MIB (RFC 3747) that provides a higher-level configuration interface for Differentiated Services (DiffServ) quality-of-service policy. It exposes a table of named configuration entries that act as reusable templates, which can be instantiated and associated with a specific interface and traffic direction to activate a QoS policy. As a monitoring module it is used to check the software configuration state of QoS policy management -- which templates exist, who owns them, when they last changed, and whether a given configuration is currently active -- which is important for confirming a QoS rollout took effect as intended rather than silently failing to apply. It explicitly depends on the base DIFFSERV-MIB (RFC 3289), whose per-instance datapath objects this module's templates are used to instantiate. It is deployed on routers and switches implementing DiffServ QoS, typically configured and monitored centrally by policy-management or NMS software. Engineers can download the DIFFSERV-CONFIG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DIFFSERV-CONFIG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- routers and switches implementing IETF DiffServ QoS
Monitoring Examples
An administrator polling diffServConfigTable can enumerate configuration entries via diffServConfigId and diffServConfigDescr, check diffServConfigOwner to see which management application created a given policy template, and use diffServConfigStart together with diffServConfigStatus to confirm whether the template is currently activated on an interface. A recent diffServConfigLastChange timestamp on a config an administrator didn't expect to change would flag an unauthorized or accidental QoS policy modification.
What Can Be Monitored
- QoS config template ID/description
- config ownership
- config activation state
- config last-change timestamp
- config row status/storage type
