Category: Environmental Monitoring

Description: Monitors power entry module (PEM) status and power feed alarms on Cyan optical shelf hardware.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CYAN-PEM-MIB?

This MIB monitors the Power Entry Module (PEM) on Cyan (now Ciena) optical packet-transport shelf hardware, a vendor-specific extension covering power feed and inventory status for such shelves. It exposes hardware inventory data (asset tag, MAC address, CLEI code, identifier, description) alongside operational-state fields for each PEM installed in a shelf. It is explicitly used for hardware status monitoring: cyanPemAdminState tracks whether a power module is in or out of service, and the auto-in-service soak timer governs the automatic bring-up delay after insertion, both central to power-supply health monitoring. It likely depends on a broader Cyan shelf/chassis MIB framework for shelf and slot indexing context. Deployment context is Cyan/Ciena optical packet-transport shelves in carrier and metro networks. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CYAN-PEM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CYAN-PEM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cyan (Ciena) optical/packet-transport shelf
  • carrier optical networking chassis power module

Monitoring Examples

Poll cyanPemTable (indexed by cyanPemShelfId, cyanPemPemId) for cyanPemAdminState to detect a power module that is administratively or operationally down, and check cyanPemAutoinserviceSoakTimeSec after a hot-swap to see if the module is still in its soak period before going active. A module stuck in soak state past its expected timer would suggest a failed PEM insertion.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PEM admin/operational state
  • power module inventory (asset tag, MAC, CLEI)
  • auto in-service soak timer
  • PEM identifier/description
