Description: Tape Device Total Errors.

This is the total number of read/write errors encountered. This value is maintained since the Tape Hardware Interface driver was loaded.

Errors may occasionally occur. If this value should rise dramatically, you may need to clean the device. If you continue to have errors, you may have a problem. Some common causes include radio frequency interference (RFI) on the bus cables, bad or missing terminating resisters on the drives or having more than one device with the same SCSI ID. Insure the bus cable is free of obstructions and that the devices on the bus are properly configured.

What is cpqDaTapeCountersTotalErrors?

cpqDaTapeCountersTotalErrors counts the total number of read and write errors a tape device has encountered, maintained since the Tape Hardware Interface driver was loaded. A dramatic rise in this combined error count suggests the device needs cleaning, and if errors persist after cleaning, a real hardware problem, potentially from RFI or bad connections, is likely. For example, an admin seeing this overall error count climb steadily over several backup cycles would schedule that drive for cleaning and, if the trend continues, replacement.
