Category: Network Monitoring (RMON), Vendor: RADLAN/Cisco SB

Description: Manages Cisco Small Business RMON (Remote Network Monitoring) statistics and history collection.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCOSB-RMON?

CISCOSB-RMON is a Cisco Small Business private MIB extension to standard RMON (Remote Network Monitoring), adding vendor-specific controls for history collection such as bucket quota and maximum global buckets. It exposes a history-control table defining data source, sample interval, requested/granted bucket counts, and owner for each RMON history collection instance. Its monitoring value is in traffic performance history—letting administrators configure and audit how much historical traffic statistics data (packet/octet counts over time) is being retained per interface. It directly extends the standard IETF RMON MIB (RFC 2819) rather than replacing it. It is deployed on Cisco Small Business switches where administrators want longer or more granular traffic history than the stock RMON defaults allow. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCOSB-RMON file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOSB-RMON. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Small Business switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check rlRmonControlHistoryControlMaxGlobalBuckets and rlRmonControlHistoryControlQuotaBucket to see the device-wide ceiling on RMON history buckets, then inspect rlHistoryControlTable/rlHistoryControlEntry (via rlHistoryControlDataSource and rlHistoryControlInterval) to confirm which interface is being sampled and at what interval. If rlHistoryControlBucketsGranted is consistently lower than rlHistoryControlBucketsRequested, it indicates the device is out of RMON history capacity and some requested history collections are being truncated.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RMON history bucket quota
  • max global history buckets
  • per-source history control interval
  • requested vs granted bucket counts
  • history collection owner/status
