This read-write INTEGER lets an admin force a specific stack unit to become the stack master. An admin would use this to deliberately control which physical unit holds management and control-plane responsibility, for example to ensure the unit in the most accessible rack position is master for easier console access. For example, after installing a new, more capable unit at position 1, the admin writes that unit's number to this object to force it to take over as master from the previous master unit.
