Organization: Cisco Systems, Inc.

Last Updated: 2018-07-16

Category: Cisco Devices, VLAN and Bridging

Description: Manages VLAN Interface Manager (VIM) providing VLAN-to-interface bindings and SVI lifecycle control on Cisco switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-VIM-MIB?

This Cisco vendor MIB serves the Cisco Virtualized Infrastructure Manager (CVIM), the OpenStack-based platform Cisco uses to deploy NFV (network functions virtualization) pods, and it explicitly handles only notifications rather than polled data. It exposes fault information — pod and node identifiers, fault source, severity, code, description, and creation time — as a trap-driven fault/alarm feed. Its monitoring purpose is software/system fault status: it flags problems detected within a specific compute or control node of a virtualized infrastructure pod, functioning like an alarm log rather than continuous hardware counters. It operates alongside Cisco's broader NFV/VIM management stack and relies on standard SNMP notification mechanisms to deliver alerts. It is deployed in Cisco NFV infrastructure pods used by service providers and enterprises running virtualized network functions. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-VIM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-VIM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Virtualized Infrastructure Manager (VIM) NFV pod node

Monitoring Examples

This MIB is primarily a notification/fault module rather than a polling target: when Cisco VIM detects a problem, it emits a trap carrying cvimPodId, cvimNodeId, cvimFaultSource, cvimFaultSeverity, cvimFaultCode, and cvimFaultDescription along with cvimFaultCreationTime. An NMS subscribing to ciscoVimMIBNotifs would use a stream of high-severity faults from the same cvimNodeId to identify a specific compute or control node within the VIM pod that is failing, rather than polling scalar or table objects directly.

What Can Be Monitored

  • fault severity
  • fault code/description
  • fault source
  • pod/node identifier
  • fault creation time
