This reports the configured operating mode of this physical FC port, e.g. how it presents and behaves on the fabric (such as a straight uplink versus a port-channel member mode). For this port, the configured mode determines what kind of peer and cabling topology it's expected to support, so a mode mismatch with the far-end device is a common reason a physically-connected, powered-up port still won't pass traffic. For example, a port configured in a mode expecting a direct point-to-point uplink will not correctly negotiate against a peer expecting to be part of a port channel.
