An admin seeing timeouts specifically (rather than outright failures) climbing on one flow should suspect a latency or congestion problem on that particular path - such as an overloaded target or a marginal long-distance link - rather than a hard error condition. Timeouts concentrated on a flow running over an FCIP extension link, for instance, would point to WAN latency or packet loss as the likely cause.
