What Is CISCO-PORT-CHANNEL-MIB?

CISCO-PORT-CHANNEL-MIB provides managed objects for Cisco port channel (link aggregation) interfaces, used to bundle multiple physical links into a single logical channel for redundancy and increased bandwidth. It exposes per-channel configuration and operational data including administrative/operational channel mode, member port list, and details of the last channel-membership action taken. Its monitoring value is centered on link-aggregation health: verifying that the operational channel mode matches the administrative setting, that the expected member ports are present in portChannelMemberList, and inspecting portChannelLastActionStatus/Cause to diagnose why a port was recently added to or removed from the channel (e.g., due to a link failure or misconfiguration). It is designed to work alongside CISCO-FC-FE-MIB and the standard Interfaces MIB (RFC 2863), on which it depends for underlying interface indexing. It is deployed on Cisco switches and routers using EtherChannel/port-channel link aggregation in enterprise and data-center networks. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-PORT-CHANNEL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PORT-CHANNEL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco switch or router (EtherChannel/port-channel capable platform)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll portChannelTable (portChannelAdminChannelMode, portChannelOperChannelMode) to confirm a port channel's negotiated mode (e.g., LACP active/passive) matches its administrative configuration. portChannelMemberList reveals which physical ports currently belong to the channel, and a mismatch from the expected set indicates a member link has dropped out. portChannelLastActionStatus and portChannelLastActionStatusCause explain why a port was most recently added or removed, such as a link-down event or STP inconsistency, while portChannelCreationTime helps correlate channel age with a reported outage.

What Can Be Monitored

  • admin vs. operational channel mode
  • member port list
  • last channel action status and cause
  • last action timestamp
  • channel creation time
