Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces

Description: Manages OAM (Operations, Administration, and Maintenance) loopback and continuity checks for ATM and Ethernet.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-OAM-MIB?

CISCO-OAM-MIB is a Cisco proprietary MIB for invoking and tracking OAM loopback pings on ATM connections, used to test connectivity and continuity within Cisco's ATM OAM implementation (and related Ethernet OAM contexts). It exposes a request/response table for OAM loopback pings, including the ATM VPI/VCI or location parameters targeted, ping count, timeout, and inter-ping delay, plus associated trap notifications. Rather than exposing general hardware health, this module is squarely a fault/diagnostic MIB: it lets an operator actively test whether a specific ATM connection is alive and responding, surfacing connectivity failures as soon as a loopback ping fails or times out. It depends on Cisco's underlying ATM interface and connection MIBs to identify the VPI/VCI or interface being tested, and aligns conceptually with ITU-T/ATM Forum OAM standards. It is typically deployed on Cisco ATM switches and routers where network operators need to actively verify circuit continuity as part of fault isolation. Engineers can download the CISCO-OAM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-OAM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco ATM switch/router
  • Cisco Ethernet OAM-capable switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would create an entry in oamLoopbackPingTable, setting oamLoopbackPingVpi/oamLoopbackPingVci (or oamLoopbackPingLocation) to identify the target ATM connection, and oamLoopbackPingCount/oamLoopbackPingTimeout/oamLoopbackPingDelay to control the test, then read the results to see whether the loopback failed, indicating a break or misconfiguration on that VPI/VCI path. The associated oamLoopbackPingMIBTraps would notify the NMS if a scheduled ping test detects a loss of continuity.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ATM VPI/VCI loopback ping results
  • OAM ping count, timeout, and delay settings
  • connection continuity/failure status
  • OAM ping location/type
