Description: Manages IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation (EtherChannel/port-channel) with Cisco-specific extensions beyond the standard LAG MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-LAG-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-LAG-MIB?

CISCO-LAG-MIB is a Cisco private MIB that extends the standard IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation MIB (IEEE8023-LAG-MIB) with objects either excluded from the IEEE standard or specific to Cisco's EtherChannel/port-channel implementation. It exposes configuration data for load-distribution hashing (including MPLS-aware distribution), maximum aggregator counts, per-aggregation-group protocol type (e.g., PAgP vs LACP), and per-port administrative status and rate within an aggregation. Its monitoring focus is chiefly software/configuration and link-status oriented -- confirming which link-aggregation protocol is running on a bundle, whether member ports are administratively up, and whether traffic distribution/hashing settings are correctly applied -- which matters for detecting misconfigured or partially-formed EtherChannel bundles. It explicitly complements the standards-based IEEE8023-LAG-MIB rather than replacing it, adding Cisco-only extensions. It is deployed on Cisco switches and routers wherever EtherChannel/LACP or PAgP link bundling is used to provide redundant, higher-bandwidth trunk links. Engineers can download the CISCO-LAG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-LAG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco switch or router with EtherChannel/LACP port aggregation

Monitoring Examples

An operator polling clagAggProtocolTable/clagAggProtocolEntry via clagAggProtocolType can confirm whether a given aggregation group is running PAgP, LACP, or static mode, catching a mismatch between two switches' negotiation protocols that would prevent the bundle from forming. clagAggPortTable/clagAggPortEntry rows expose clagAggPortAdminStatus and clagAggPortRate per member port, letting an admin spot a port that's administratively down or running at an unexpected speed within the bundle. clagAggDistributionProtocol and clagAggHashDistMethodGlobalConfig would be checked to verify traffic is being load-balanced across member links as intended rather than concentrated on one link.

What Can Be Monitored

  • link aggregation protocol type (LACP/PAgP)
  • per-port admin status within a bundle
  • per-port link rate
  • traffic distribution/hashing method
  • maximum aggregator count
