Category: Cisco Devices, Pseudowire, SNMP Framework
Description: Declares agent capability for the IETF pseudowire Ethernet MIB on Cisco devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-IETF-PW-ENET-CAPABILITY?
This is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES statement, not a data MIB, documenting which object groups of CISCO-IETF-PW-ENET-MIB, the Ethernet-over-pseudowire MIB, a given Cisco device's SNMP agent implements. It carries no pollable data of its own; instead it records conformance so management platforms know whether Ethernet pseudowire configuration and statistics objects are available on a particular Cisco platform/software combination. Its monitoring relevance is indirect: it lets an NMS confirm, before polling, whether Ethernet pseudowire operational/configuration data can be retrieved from a device, avoiding wasted queries on unsupported features. It is entirely dependent on CISCO-IETF-PW-ENET-MIB, which in turn depends on the generic IETF PW-MIB framework. It applies to Cisco provider-edge routers offering Ethernet-over-MPLS/pseudowire services and is consulted during MIB compilation/NMS capability discovery rather than at live-polling time. Engineers can download the CISCO-IETF-PW-ENET-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IETF-PW-ENET-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco provider-edge routers offering Ethernet-over-MPLS pseudowire services
Monitoring Examples
An NMS discovering a Cisco PE router's pseudowire capabilities would check this capability statement to confirm which CISCO-IETF-PW-ENET-MIB groups, such as Ethernet VC status objects, are implemented before adding Ethernet pseudowire monitoring to that device's polling profile. If Ethernet-specific pseudowire statistics groups aren't declared as supported, the monitoring tool would fall back to the generic PW-MIB objects instead. This capability negotiation prevents repeated SNMP timeouts against OIDs the agent doesn't instantiate.
What Can Be Monitored
- supported Ethernet pseudowire MIB object groups
- agent conformance to CISCO-IETF-PW-ENET-MIB
