Description: Manages DFS radar detection on Cisco 802.11a/n access points, monitoring radar events and channel change activity.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-DOT11-RADAR-MIB?
CISCO-DOT11-RADAR-MIB is a Cisco wireless-networking MIB covering Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) radar detection on IEEE 802.11a/h/n root devices, i.e. access points and root bridges operating in radar-regulated spectrum. It exposes configuration data (preferred and new operating frequencies) and event/fault data around radar detection, specifically channel-switch and channel-return events and their timestamps. Its primary monitoring value is fault and event tracking rather than continuous performance counters: it lets an operator confirm when and why an AP vacated a channel due to detected radar and when it returned, which is critical for diagnosing unexpected wireless outages or channel instability in regulatory-sensitive deployments. It builds on the IEEE 802.11 standard's DFS requirements and is used alongside other Cisco wireless (dot11) MIBs. It is deployed in enterprise and outdoor Cisco Wi-Fi networks operating in the 5GHz band where radar avoidance is mandated by regulators. Engineers can download the CISCO-DOT11-RADAR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-DOT11-RADAR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco 802.11a/n/h access points
- Cisco wireless root bridges
Monitoring Examples
An administrator can monitor cdrDot11NewFrequency and cdrDot11PreferFrequency to see which channel an AP moved to and which channel it prefers to return to after a radar event. cdrChannelSwitchLastTime and cdrChannelReturnLastTime give timestamps for the most recent forced channel switch and subsequent return, letting an admin correlate a reported wireless outage with a radar detection event rather than a hardware failure. Enabling cdrChannelSwitchNotifEnabled and cdrChannelReturnNotifEnabled ensures SNMP traps fire for these events so they can be tracked proactively instead of only via polling.
What Can Be Monitored
- current/new operating frequency after radar event
- preferred return frequency
- last channel switch time
- last channel return time
- channel switch/return notification status
