This field tells the switch which kind of authentication traffic to send to this particular TACACS+ server entry: administrative userLogin sessions, 802.1X port-based network access control, or both. Setting it wrong routes the wrong traffic to the wrong server, for example sending dot1x endpoint authentication to a server that's only provisioned to validate switch-login credentials, causing wired clients to be denied network access even though admin logins work fine. A campus switch might set this to dot1x(2) for a server dedicated to authenticating connecting laptops, while a separate server entry handles userLogin(1) for CLI access.
