Description: A count of the number of Variable Request OAMPDUs transmitted on this interface.
An Variable Request OAMPDU is indicated by a valid frame with (1) destination MAC address equal to that of the reserved MAC address for Slow Protocols (See 43B of [802.3ah]), (2) a lengthOrType field equal to the reserved type for Slow Protocols, (3) a Slow Protocols subtype equal to that of the subtype reserved for OAM, and (4) an OAMPDU code equal to the OAM Variable Request code.
Discontinuities of this counter can occur at re-initialization of the management system, and at other times as indicated by the value of the ifCounterDiscontinuityTime.
What is cienaCesOamVariableRequestTx?
This Counter32 (frames) counts Variable Request OAMPDUs transmitted on this interface, per its description, which the local OAM client sends to ask the peer for the value of monitored variable branches, such as interface counters, it doesn't otherwise expose via normal SNMP paths across the link. This is part of 802.3ah's optional variable-retrieval function, so an incrementing count here indicates active use of remote-variable polling over Ethernet OAM rather than passive discovery alone. An engineer would check this counter to confirm a network-management tool that relies on OAM variable retrieval, rather than SNMP, is actually issuing requests as expected.
