Module: CIENA-CES-OAM-MIB

OID (symbolic): CIENA-CES-OAM-MIB::cienaCesOamPeerMacAddress

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.1271.2.3.5.1.1.5.1.3

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: OCTET STRING

Access: read-only

Description: The MAC address of the peer OAM entity. The MAC address is derived from the most recently received OAMPDU. This value is initialized to all zeros (0x000000000000). This value is invalid if the cienaCesOamPeerStatus is inactive.

An OAMPDU is indicated by a valid frame with (1) destination MAC address equal to that of the reserved MAC address for Slow Protocols (See 43B of [802.3ah]), (2) a lengthOrType field equal to the reserved type for Slow Protocols, (3) and a Slow Protocols subtype equal to that of the subtype reserved for OAM.

What is cienaCesOamPeerMacAddress?

This read-only OCTET STRING (6 bytes) reports the MAC address of the OAM peer, derived from the most recently received OAMPDU, per its description, initialized to all zeros and considered invalid whenever cienaCesOamPeerStatus reads inactive. This is one of the few fields that lets an engineer positively identify which specific device is on the other end of an Ethernet OAM session without needing separate LLDP or physical inspection, which is useful when a link runs through unlabeled patch panels or media converters. An engineer auditing a metro-Ethernet ring for unexpected peer changes, after a fiber re-patch for instance, would compare this MAC address against expected inventory to confirm the link now terminates on the correct device.
