This distinction matters operationally because a LACP-mode LAG will automatically detect and exclude a misconfigured or mismatched member port through negotiation, while a manual-mode LAG will not -- a bad cable or mismatched speed on a manual LAG member can silently blackhole traffic rather than being excluded. A LAG connecting to a switch that doesn't support LACP would need to be set to manual(2), putting the burden of ensuring correct, matching configuration on both ends onto the admin instead of the protocol.
