This counts Synthetic Loss Messages, Ciena's synthetic-traffic-based loss measurement mechanism that estimates frame loss using dedicated test frames rather than tagging along on real customer traffic, that this device has transmitted. Because SLM tests generate their own traffic independent of the actual service load, this counter's activity reflects deliberate, scheduled synthetic-loss test sessions configured via the SyntheticLossSession table elsewhere in this MIB, rather than organic traffic patterns. A test configured to send 1000 SLMs per iteration would show this counter jump by exactly 1000 each time that specific session's iteration runs.
