What Is CENTILLION-VIRTUALSEGMENT-MIB?
CENTILLION-VIRTUALSEGMENT-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB for Nortel (Bay Networks) Centillion ATM switches that manages virtual LAN segments and the mapping of switch ports to those segments, an early form of VLAN implemented over the switch's ATM/LAN emulation fabric. It exposes configuration and status data including the total configured and active virtual segment counts, a per-segment table with segment type, ID, status, associated ifIndex, and both configured and active port counts. In monitoring terms it primarily supports software/configuration-level monitoring -- verifying a virtual segment's status is active, its port count matches expectations, and that configured versus active counts align, which helps catch stale or partially-applied VLAN configurations rather than raw hardware faults. It relies on the switch's underlying LAN emulation/ATM hardware and ifIndex-based interface model (aligned with IF-MIB conventions) to associate segments with physical ports. It would typically be deployed on legacy Nortel Centillion ATM switches implementing early virtual LAN segmentation. Engineers can download the CENTILLION-VIRTUALSEGMENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CENTILLION-VIRTUALSEGMENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Nortel Centillion ATM switch
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll virtualSegmentTable/virtualSegmentEntry to check virtualSegmentStatus for a given virtualSegmentId, and compare virtualSegmentConfiguredPortNumber against virtualSegmentActivePortNumber to detect ports that were configured into a segment but never came up. virtualSegmentConfigNumber versus virtualSegmentActiveNumber at the switch level would similarly reveal if some configured virtual segments failed to activate after a reload. This is a configuration-verification use case for VLAN-like segmentation rather than hardware fault detection.
What Can Be Monitored
- virtual segment status
- configured vs active segment count
- configured vs active port count per segment
- segment type and ID
