Description: Monitors per-module CPU utilization on Brocade multi-module chassis network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BROCADE-MODULE-CPU-UTIL-MIB?

BROCADE-MODULE-CPU-UTIL-MIB is a Brocade vendor MIB for monitoring CPU utilization on individual line/switch modules within a multi-slot Brocade chassis. It exposes a single focused category of performance data, per-slot CPU load, sampled over a defined interval. Its monitoring purpose is squarely hardware/software performance health: bcsiModuleCpuUtil100thPercent gives the CPU utilization in hundredths of a percent for the module in a given slot over bcsiModuleCpuUtilInterval, letting operators detect an overloaded control or line-card processor before it causes packet-forwarding or management-plane problems. It is a small, focused vendor extension that assumes an underlying Brocade chassis/entity model for slot numbering rather than depending on a specific IETF MIB. It is deployed on modular Brocade switches and routers where per-module processor headroom needs to be tracked separately from whole-chassis metrics. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the BROCADE-MODULE-CPU-UTIL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BROCADE-MODULE-CPU-UTIL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Brocade modular chassis switch/router

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll bcsiModuleCpuUtilTable/bcsiModuleCpuUtilEntry indexed by bcsiModuleCpuUtilSlotNum to read bcsiModuleCpuUtil100thPercent for each installed module. A slot consistently reporting a high percentage over bcsiModuleCpuUtilInterval would reveal that module's CPU is saturated, which could correlate with slow SNMP responses or control-plane instability on that card specifically rather than chassis-wide. bcsiModuleCpuUtilNotifications could also be configured to alert automatically when a threshold is crossed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-slot/module CPU utilization percentage
  • CPU utilization sampling interval

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using bcsiModuleCpuUtil100thPercent OID:

Select a Brocade modular chassis switches/router as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type bcsiModuleCpuUtil100thPercent into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The statistical CPU utilization in units of one-hundredth of a percent. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if utilization exceeds 85%, a common warning threshold before sustained high load affects performance. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
