Description: IETF IDR extension MIB adding BGP Communities attribute (RFC 1997) per-path visibility to the BGP-4 MIB on BGP-speaking routers

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BGP-COMMUNITIES-MIB?

BGP-COMMUNITIES-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF IDR extension to the standard BGP-4 MIB (RFC 4273), adding visibility into the BGP Communities path attribute (RFC 1997) carried on individual BGP paths. It is expected to expose per-path community-value tables correlated with the base BGP-4 MIB's path/route tables. Its monitoring value is routing-policy visibility rather than hardware status: it shows which community values are attached to which received or advertised BGP paths, useful for verifying route-tagging policy and troubleshooting community-based filtering. It explicitly extends the standard BGP4-MIB and depends on it for path identification, making it unusable standalone. It is used on BGP-speaking routers in service-provider and enterprise networks where community-based traffic engineering, blackholing, or redistribution policy needs SNMP-based verification. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the BGP-COMMUNITIES-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BGP-COMMUNITIES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • BGP-speaking router

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were extracted for this module, so specific object names cannot be cited; conceptually, this MIB would let an admin walk a communities table indexed like the BGP4-MIB's path attribute table to see which RFC 1997 community values are attached to a given prefix/peer path. An unexpected or missing community value on a route would reveal a route-map or policy misconfiguration affecting how community-based traffic engineering treats that prefix downstream.

What Can Be Monitored

  • BGP community attribute values per path
  • per-path community count
  • community-tagged route visibility
