Description: Initial IETF draft MIB for Bidirectional Forwarding Detection session management, providing session state and interval objects on BFD-capable routers

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BFD-MIB-DRAFT-00?

BFD-MIB-DRAFT-00 is an early (draft-00) version of the IETF Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) MIB, a vendor-neutral standards-track module for managing BFD sessions used to rapidly detect faults in the forwarding path between two routers. It is expected to expose BFD session tables covering session identifiers, administrative and operational state, negotiated transmit/detection intervals, and diagnostic codes. Its central value is fault detection: BFD session state directly reflects whether the forwarding path to a peer is alive, so this MIB supports monitoring of link/path fault status feeding into routing-protocol convergence rather than general device hardware health. As a BFD MIB it is meant to be used alongside routing-protocol MIBs (e.g., OSPF, BGP) that consume BFD-detected failures to trigger faster reconvergence. It is deployed on routers running BFD alongside dynamic routing protocols to achieve sub-second failure detection in service-provider and enterprise core/edge networks. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the BFD-MIB-DRAFT-00 RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BFD-MIB-DRAFT-00. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based draft MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • BFD-capable router/switch

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were extracted for this draft module, so specific table/object names cannot be cited from source data. In general use, an admin would poll a peer's BFD session state (e.g., Up/Down/AdminDown) and diagnostic code; a transition to Down with a specific diagnostic code reveals a forwarding-path failure to that peer, detected well before the routing protocol's own hold timers would expire.

What Can Be Monitored

  • BFD session state (up/down)
  • session diagnostic code
  • detection time interval
  • transmit interval
  • session discriminator
