Organization: Benu Networks

Last Updated: 2015-11-03

Category: Hardware and Environment, Vendor: Benu Networks

Description: Monitors host system resources including CPU, memory, and process utilization on Benu Networks platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BENU-HOST-MIB?

BENU-HOST-MIB is a Benu Networks proprietary module that reports on the software processes (tasks) running on the host operating system of Benu's broadband gateway and access platforms. It exposes a task/process inventory table giving each software task's name, process ID, and resource consumption. It is squarely a software/process health monitoring MIB: it reports per-task CPU usage (current, average, and maximum), run-state duration, and memory footprint (code and data segment sizes), letting an operator spot runaway processes or memory leaks. It is conceptually similar to, and often deployed alongside, standard HOST-RESOURCES-MIB concepts for process monitoring, though implemented independently as a Benu enterprise MIB. It is deployed on Benu Networks broadband gateway (BNG) platforms used by service providers for subscriber management, and a BENU-HOST-MIB download gives operators the task/process objects needed to catch a runaway process before it affects service.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BENU-HOST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Benu Networks broadband gateway platform

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk bSWTaskInfoTable/bSWTaskInfoEntry, indexed by bSWTaskIndex, to see each software task's bSWTaskName and bSWTaskProcessID alongside bSWTaskCPUUsage, bSWTaskAvgCPUUsage, and bSWTaskMaxCPUUsage. A task whose bSWTaskCPUUsage stays pinned near its bSWTaskMaxCPUUsage, or whose bSWTaskDataSegmentSize grows steadily over successive polls at each bSWTaskLoadIntervalDuration, would flag a runaway or leaking process before it affects service. bSWTaskRunStateTime helps confirm whether a task has recently restarted.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-task CPU usage (current/average/max)
  • process ID and task name
  • task run-state duration
  • code segment size
  • data segment size
  • load interval duration
